Ah, the timeless tale of every fly angler: the lament of not diving into fly fishing and fly tying sooner! It's like discovering the world's greatest secret just a tad too late. But fear not, fellow angler, for today we embark on a journey to unveil the wonders of fly tying and why it's a game-changer in your fishing arsenal.
Picture this: a rainy day, the river roaring outside, and you, nestled comfortably indoors, concocting your very own creations. That's right, tying flies becomes an addiction second only to actually fishing. Let me give you the lowdown on why you should be sitting at that tying desk right now:
1. It's a Blast:
Initially, it's all about mimicking those classic fly patterns you adore. But as your skills evolve, so does your creativity. Soon enough, you're crafting your own signature patterns. Trust me, there's nothing quite like the thrill of reeling in a catch with a fly you tied yourself.
2. Savings Galore:
Say goodbye to the days of forking over a small fortune for a handful of flies, only to watch them disappear into the river's depths. Tying your own flies is not only cost-effective but downright economical. Sure, there's an initial investment in tools and materials, but consider it an investment in your angling future. Those flies practically pay for themselves over time.
3. Convenience at Your Fingertips:
No more last-minute dashes to the fly shop or frantic online orders. Tying your own flies means having the right patterns for the right conditions, right when you need them. Need a specific fly for those tricky river conditions? Whip it up yourself, the night before your fishing trip. Talk about angling efficiency!
4. Master Your Craft, Master Your Catch:
Catching fish on your homemade flies isn't just satisfying; it's an education in itself. When working with materials that make up the fly, you'll gain invaluable insights into fish behavior, feeding habits, and the intricate dance between predator and prey. Tying flies forces you to think like a fish, strategically selecting patterns based on a myriad of factors. It's like solving a puzzle with feathers and thread.
So, why wait any longer? Embrace the art of fly tying and unlock a whole new dimension to your fishing adventures. And hey, if you need a nudge in the right direction, that's where I come in. Consider this your official invitation to join the ranks of fly tyers worldwide. Trust me, you'll thank me later when you're reeling in the big ones with your custom creations. Let's dive in and make some magic happen!
Of the hundreds of fly patterns that I experiment with, here a few that always find their way into my fly box. They’re easy to tie and catch fish.
My Custom Flies
Griffiths Gnat
One of my top dry flies. Easy and fast to tie, only two materials (Peacock herl and Hackle) This fly imitates a cluster of tiny midges.
Pheasant Tail
Everyone's “if you could only fish one fly,” pattern. I’ve added some resin to the wing case and use modern UV coated Pheasant tail.
Brassie
An oldie but goodie. A simple and effective fly because the wire body looks buggy and glistens in the light. I added wings because,... why not?
Kabari
You won’t find these weighted Tenkara flies in your local fly shop so you have to make your own. The reverse hackle is no short of “magic” on some days.
Wollybugger
Wollybugger- This will be the first streamer you learn to tie and the one that you’ll tie and catch fish on again and again. Customize to your liking.
Spanish Perdigon
Spanish Perdigon- Every ESN angler uses this fly. There are so many different variations that I don’t know what the original pattern even looks like. They work.
